Description

Historical Background
Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP) is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution established in 1950 as Coast Technical High School. In 1958, it was renamed Technical High School of Mombasa. Following the introduction of the 8-4-4 education system in 1984, it was elevated to a Technical Training Institute and renamed Mombasa Technical Training Institute. In 2016, the institution was granted National Polytechnic status through the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic Order (2016), published under Legal Notice No. 88, in accordance with the TVET Act No. 29 of 2013.

Governance
KCNP is governed by a Council appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Education. The Chief Principal serves as the Secretary to the Council.

Enrolment and Staffing
The institution has witnessed remarkable growth in both student enrolment and staffing. From a modest beginning in 1990 with 23 students and 24 teaching staff, KCNP now boasts over 8,000 trainees and more than 150 teaching staff.

Academic Programmes
KCNP offers a wide range of academic programmes across eleven departments:

  1. Applied Sciences
  2. Building and Civil Engineering

  6. Hospitality and Tourism Management

The Polytechnic places strong emphasis on hands-on, competency-based training to ensure that learners—whether new trainees or those seeking formal recognition of skills acquired through experience—graduate with industry-relevant competencies that enhance their employability and effectiveness in the job market.

Equipment and Facilities
With support from the Government of Kenya and development partners, KCNP is equipped with modern, state-of-the-art facilities and equipment in key areas including Engineering, Hospitality, Fashion Design, Applied Sciences, Health Sciences, Cosmetology, and ICT.

East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project (EASTRIP)
In 2018, KCNP was competitively selected by the Government of Kenya and the World Bank to become a Regional Flagship Marine Transport and Port Logistics Centre under the EASTRIP initiative. The project includes Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, with five Kenyan TVET institutions participating. KCNP is developing a Regional Centre of Excellence in Marine Transport and Port Logistics to produce skilled professionals for the maritime industry. The Marine School is currently under construction in Kombani, Kwale County, and is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2025.
